Why Oeste

Located on the Portuguese coast, the West benefits from a pivotal position bordering the Leiria Region to the north, Lezíria do Tejo to the east and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area to the south.

In terms of accessibility, and starting with the highway, the West sub-region is served by a network that allows connection to Lisbon, the North and South of the country and also Spain: the Autoestrada do Oeste (A8) which connects Lisbon to Leiria approximately 136 km long, passing through Torres Vedras, Bombarral and Caldas da Rainha; the Ribatejo Motorway (A10), approximately 40 km long, which connects Alverca and Samora Correia, passing through Arruda dos Vinhos; and, finally, the Atlantic Motorway (A15), approximately 40 km long, which connects Caldas da Rainha (A8) to Santarém (A1).

Oeste quality of Life

The proximity to the capital and its metropolitan area marks the West sub-region at a demographic and socioeconomic level, and it is not possible to dissociate the development of the West without analyzing the impacts of its integration in the functional structuring of the city of Lisbon.

Despite its small territorial size, the West sub-region occupies a prominent position in the Center region in terms of population and economics. With a size of 2,220.2 km2, the West occupies only 7.9% of the entire territory of the Central region, being the 7th sub-region of the Central region with the smallest territorial surface, only superior to the sub-region of Aveiro, according to 2022 data.
